What is a UK passport Photo Code and how do you use it?

Understand what a digital passport Photo Code does, where it is entered and what to check before adding the photo to your application.

A Photo Code is a short reference that lets an online UK passport application retrieve a digital photograph. Instead of finding and uploading an image file during the application, you enter the code and the associated photo appears on screen.

What the code represents

The code points HM Passport Office to a digital passport photo held by a photo provider. It is not a passport application number and it does not mean that HM Passport Office has already approved the photo.

The official service explains that photo shops and booths can supply a code with a photograph. Passport Photo Code provides the same type of reference alongside the prepared digital image.

How to use a Photo Code

During the online passport application:

  1. choose the option to provide a photo using a code
  2. enter the Photo Code exactly as it is shown
  3. wait for the photograph to appear
  4. check that it is the correct, current photograph of you
  5. continue and submit it as part of the application

The exact wording on the application may change, so follow the instructions shown on screen. The official Photo Code help page also illustrates the process.

Check the photo before submitting

Seeing the image on screen is an important final check. Make sure:

  • it is your photograph and is a good likeness
  • it is the version you expected to use
  • your face is clear and the image has loaded correctly
  • no part of the code was mistyped

If the wrong photo appears, or the photo does not load, stop and check the code before continuing.

Does a Photo Code guarantee acceptance?

No. A Photo Code is a way to transfer the digital image into the application. HM Passport Office still checks whether the photograph meets its rules and makes the final decision.

Good lighting, a plain light-coloured background, a front-facing pose and a clear, recent image all remain important. Read our guide to taking a UK passport photo at home before choosing your original.

Get your photo and code

You can create your digital passport photo and Photo Code without entering payment or card details. Keep the code somewhere you can copy accurately when you begin your online application.
