UK digital passport photo requirements
A practical summary for online applications, based on HM Passport Office guidance.

Digital file quality
- Colour, clear and in focus.
- At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall.
- JPEG between 50KB and 10MB for digital submission.
- Unaltered by filters, retouching or computer software.
- No red eye, blur or compression artefacts.
Background and framing
- Use a plain, light-coloured background without texture or pattern.
- No objects or other people in the image.
- Make sure the subject contrasts clearly with the background.
- For a phone photo, include the head, shoulders and upper body. Do not crop it yourself.
Face and expression
- Face forward and look straight into the camera.
- Keep a plain expression with the mouth closed.
- Eyes must be open, visible and not covered by hair.
- No shadows on the face or behind the head.
- No head covering unless for religious or medical reasons.
- Remove glasses if possible. If essential, avoid tint, glare, reflection or frames covering the eyes.
Babies and children
Children must be alone in the photo. Babies must not hold toys or use dummies. Children under 6 do not need to look directly at the camera or keep a plain expression; babies under one do not need their eyes open. A supporting hand must not be visible.
How recent?
The photo should be a good likeness and must have been taken within the last month. You need a new photo for each new passport application even if your appearance has not changed.
