International visa photos + UK Photo Code in one visit

Customers ask for “passport photos” and mean three different things: a UK Photo Code, a UK print, and a visa or foreign size. You can often shoot once and prepare more than one output. This is a shop note, not a visa advisory.

Passport Photo Code is an independent service. It is not affiliated with GOV.UK or any foreign mission. No bundle guarantees acceptance by HMPO or a visa post.

Bundles that make sense

Write them on the till card:

1. UK only — prints + Photo Code. Your default.
2. UK + one extra size — same sitting, second crop (common Schengen/US-style sizes you actually support).
3. Extra size only — no UK code. Charge for the preparation you do, not for a code you did not issue.

Do not invent a “worldwide official pack.” List the sizes you can produce. If a customer needs a crop you do not offer, decline. A wrong millimetre is worse than a polite no.

Shoot once

One well-lit, plain-background portrait can feed both jobs if the framing is honest:

• Head and shoulders, even light, no hard wall shadow
• Neutral expression unless a specific visa rule says otherwise — check that country’s published rules, do not guess
• Glasses: many visa posts are stricter than a rushed till assumption. If in doubt, take a frame with and without

Then prepare twice:

• UK digital specification + Photo Code + UK print sheet
• The other size as a print (and a file if you sell it)

Do not stretch or pad a UK crop to “make” a visa size. Re-export from the original sitting.

What to say

“We’ll take one photo, prepare the UK version with a Photo Code for the British form, and a separate print for the visa size you asked for. Each authority checks its own photo. Neither output is an approval.”

Give two handoffs if there are two products: the code on the receipt and a labelled visa print (“US visa — not the UK code”). Mixing them in one envelope without labels is how people upload the wrong file.

Pricing the extra work

You are selling a second preparation, not “another code.” A modest add-on above the UK package is enough if the crop is routine. A rare size that needs a rule-check and a reprint belongs on a higher line.

Do not throw in a UK Photo Code for free “because they’re already sitting” unless that is a written promotion. The code is the reason many people came in.

When not to bundle

• You cannot get a plain background good enough for either set of rules
• The customer needs a digital upload to a foreign portal you do not support, and they only wanted that
• Staff on this shift have not been shown that visa size

Send them away cleanly rather than issuing a UK code on a photo taken for a completely different crop.
